Marriage: Advice from the elderly

Sitting around the dinner table the other night, the topic of making marriages last came up. My sister’s boyfriend said that he once asked an elderly couple what kept their marriage alive. The woman replied, “We never got sick of each other at the same time.”

It took a second for the truth of that to really sink in. At first, I laughed thinking that maybe people shouldn’t stay together if they can’t stand each other.  But then I started thinking back. There do seem to be times in the past where I really couldn’t stand my husband. I never said anything to him about it though. I now wonder if there have been times where he couldn’t stand me.

I hear advice all the time about what makes a marriage last. I think this particular bit of advice is going to be my favorite. What about you? What marital advice have you heard over the years that has left a lasting impression on you?
